On site

A new shot from the KD gallery project currently on site in Kuala Lumpur. The retaining wall of local quartz rubble has been completed, and the steel frames for two of the three pavilions have been erected. The first few courses of the wall of ventilating concrete blockwork have been laid, showing the outline of the garden courtyard that will enclose the buildings. More to follow.

Electric Light Station

The Electric Light Station opens today; a temporary pavilion designed and built by us and our students in Studio 8 of the Cass School of Architecture as part of Islington Exhibits, an initiative to unlock hidden venues in Islington and give artists and craftspeople a space to display their work.

Exploring the historic use of the site, the structure recalls industrial and religious archetypes. It is designed to create an informal backdrop for public events and a contemplative interior space with specific qualities of light and sound.

It is made from 2" x 1" softwood and other materials partially recycled from the Cass Summer Show. Thanks to Price & Myers for assistance with structural design.

Exhibition at the Cass

The Cass summer show opens today. Our students in Studio 8 have been looking at London City Airport; first investigating its disjointed and neglected surroundings, then making design proposals for new buildings to serve the airport and the local community. The show runs until Sunday 5th July in Spring House on Holloway Road.

Solid and Liquid

First shots from Solid and Liquid, an exhibition held by the System-Design class at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts. The exhibition is being held in a glazed park pavilion from the DDR era in Potsdam, and we contributed a bookshelf (in the background of this shot) which refers to the interlocking geometry of the 1970s precast concrete structures in the park.

Vauxhall Gardens

Our competition entry for the RIBA competition for Vauxhall - The Missing Link. Vauxhall Gardens will run along the viaduct between the new Nine Elms underground station and Lambeth Palace.

Three follies are proposed at key points along the viaduct to create connections to the Green Link and the Thames. The follies are designed to recall elements of Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens: The House, The Colonnade and The Walk.

Hot off the press

First shots from our recently completed gallery project in Kuala Lumpur. On a corner plot surrounded by construction sites, the gallery is designed as a series of distinct volumes clad in galvanised expanded metal. The walls at low level are clad in "Shanghai Plaster", a traditional local form of pebbledash, with a serrated profile enhancing the play of shadow in Malaysia's soft light conditions.

Planning permission

We have won planning permission for five flats and extended office space at the rooftop of a former warehouse building in Spitalfields. A contemporary interpretation of the adjacent roofscapes, the extension is clad in perforated anodised aluminium. The flats are arranged around internal courtyards with terraces looking at the City of London.

Gallery completion

A first photograph of the completed gallery in Singapore, looking from the gallery space through two of the three captured gardens. Drawing from the precedent of the "black and white" house, a hybrid between Malayan vernacular typologies and British half-timbered decoration, the layers of construction are treated in alternating black and white finishes.

Studio 8 in Leipzig

A collaboration between our students in The Cass Studio 8 and Professor Oliver Klimpel's Klasse System-Design at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, Leipzig.

The exhibition News from Nowhere ran from 19th - 26th November 2012 as the culmination of an interdisciplinary workshop. Five display structures were designed and built by the students, then used as the basis of a joint exhibition of the work of the two studios; the structures will be adapted and re-used in future exhibitions.

The Cass

Our studio this year at the School of Architecture at The Cass will investigate London City Airport. As debate rages about the aviation capacity of London, the busiest city airport system in the world, and the conflict between the economic benefits and environmental costs of air travel, we will explore the potential for an expanded and developed London City Airport to benefit the people of Newham, one of the most deprived areas of the UK.

Urban Reasoning

We have been working with We Made That on a collaborative publication called "Urban Reasoning", which we will be presenting today at the UCL Urban Lab Cities Methodologies event.

The document was funded by UCL Urban Lab and AHRC as an output of the Creative City Limits research network.

The Urban Reasoning project aims to engage with a number of unanswered questions about the relationship between theory and practice and expand on the network's discussions meaningfully, critically and playfully.
