Working in collaboration with the students of Oliver Klimpel's System Design Class and a group of our students from the Cass, we have designed and built an outdoor pavilion and event space in Leipzig between the Academy of Visual Arts and the University Library.
The project explores the tension between the sober Beaux-Arts architecture of the adjacent institutions and the critical activism of the current academic and student population.
Designed and built in a collaborative process with the students, the project has injected the courtyard with new life, discourse, adventure, conflict and fun. Re-framing the relationship between a gloomy and under-used courtyard and the adjacent pedestrian route and garden, the arched pavilion provides a covered and shaded space for parties and events, and an array of light bulbs illuminating the courtyard at night.
A mobile stair on castors acts as an auditorium for debates and performances and incorporates an exhibition wall curated by the students.
The project was selected for the exhibition ‘Heart, Allure, and Feeling’ in the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts.
